Abstract

Erbium-doped optical amplifiers have the potential to significantly increase transmission capacity, which is attractive for cost effective systems [1], [2]. The repeater spacing is also an important parameter for system design. To design a Giga-bits / s transmission system with optimum repeater spacing, the effect of Kerr nonlinearity on transmission performance is experimentally clarified. Experimental results are collected from a 10 Gb / s transmission system. Furthermore, the results are used to determine the relation between repeater spacing and the required repeater output power.
