Abstract

Optical frequency-division-multiplexing (FDM) techniques have been intensely studied for future lightwave communication networks. A 100 channel optical FDM transmission/distribution experiment at 622 Mb/s over 50 km has been demonstrated[1], and common amplification of 100 channels has been also achieved by employing an Er3+-doped fiber amplifier[2]. The advent of the optical amplifier raises the concern of optical nonlinear effects, and removes fiber-loss as the dominant concern in lightwave communication systems.
