Erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) have proven useful to enhance the budget of amplitude- modulation vestigial-sideband (AM-VSB) fiber-based CATV systems [1]. EDFA have become crucial devices to allow transport and splitting from a single transmitter to a large amount of optical receivers [2]. This enables to lower the subscriber equipment cost, key condition for CATV development. Thus, it seems important to us to examine what can be achieved using 1.48 µm pumped field-ready EDFA within a realistic CATV system experiment. We show what are the relevant EDFA parameters to be used in CATV systems. Results are also presented on composite second-order (CSO) distortion along with some conclusions on system general aspects.
