Ultrafast laser interaction with fused silica: from damage threshold to nanomachining

Abstract

Major absorption channels (multi-photon, tunnel, impact ionization) are investigated for pulse duration down to 7 fs. At 7fs we showed that damage and ablation thresholds coincide due to sharp increase of the free electron density.
