Abstract

Recently an extension of Miller’s formula has been used to describe the dispersion of n2 and higher order Kerr coefficients for air molecules. Using the quantum mechanical sum over states (SOS) model for linear symmetric molecules we derive general expressions for the frequency dispersion off-resonance and the non-resonant n2 of air molecules. By comparing with published measurements of the sign of the non-resonant n2 we show that the extended Miller formula is not applicable.
