Abstract

Undoubtedly, the growth in the demand for Ethernet services has service providers everywhere striving to understand how to deliver them most cost-effectively. There are a number of choices for delivering Ethernet services in the metro. One popular choice is to carry Ethernet over SONET, and this paper looks at the pros and cons of this approach. To overcome some of the issues associated with SONET, some operators opt to carry Ethernet over dark fiber, but this approach also has limitations. An approach that is winning strong acceptance recently is delivering Ethernet directly over transparent wavelengths via wavelength division multiplexing (WDM).
