THz Quantum Devices

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Semiconductor quantum structures have led to the impressive development in quantum well photodetectors (QWPs) and quantum cascade lasers (QCLs), resulting in real world applications. In this talk I will first briefly overview the current research status on these and related quantum devices. I will then discuss recent progresses on THz quantum devices. The most critical issue of these devices is their need for cryogenic cooling. Our recent work on both THz QWIPs and QCLs will be presented, including the achievement of record operating temperature of ~200K on QCLs and the further improvement on grating coupled QWIPs. Future promising research directions will also be discussed. These include the use of other materials systems as well as the employment of quantum dots.
