Upper Limits to Near-field Radiative Heat Transfer: Generalizing the Blackbody Concept

Abstract

I describe energy-conservation principles that answer a basic question: what is the maximum radiative heat transfer rate between closely separated bodies? The new bounds offer the possibility for significant future enhancements, for thermophotovoltaics and beyond.
