Abstract

By using a novel automated optimization method, we demonstrate that several figures of merit of photonic crystal slab structures can be improved dramatically while keeping the designs fabrication-friendly. We achieve quality factors of simple nano-cavities exceeding 106. We then present a novel coupled-resonator optical waveguide, whose optimized designs display low-losses and slow-light propagation with record-high group index-bandwidth product.
