Abstract
The standard formalism of second-harmonic generation appears inadequate in the case of highly dispersive nonlinear materials. In this paper, a more general but still simple formalism is described and compared to the standard one. It is found that in case of highly dispersive media, such as organic materials, the standard formalism might lead to inaccuracies as high as 30 %. It then appears preferable to use a more general formalism when the Maker fringes method is used.
