On the Fundamental Limits of Far-Field Detection of Active Microsphere Whispering Gallery Modes

Abstract

This paper investigates the Q-factor limits for far-field collection of the whispering gallery modes of active microspheres. It is shown that non-resolvable ‘mode-splitting’ arising from slight asphericity accounts for the typically low Q-factors.
