Abstract
As light was believed to be an oscillation in “ether”, filaments have their origin in complex interactions in a medium made of air molecules, bound and free electrons. The bound electrons and the molecules play a dominant role in modifying the polarization of light, changing the ellipticity and the angle of a elliptically polarized beam. Measurements of the polarization evolution are presented, for the pre-filamentation phase as well as during the filament itself.
