Stimulated emission from filaments in air

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

We report on our recent results concerning stimulated emission from filament plasmas in air. Both forward and backward amplified spontaneous emission is observed. Optical gain arises from population inversion in neutral or ionized nitrogen molecules. The polarization of the femtosecond pump laser pulse is shown to play a crucial role in selecting the inversion scheme.
