Controlling the Motion of Optical Elements with Laser Light

Abstract

Optical cavities that contain mobile elements are currently attracting much interest for cooling the mechanical degrees of freedom of macroscopic objects. We discuss two scenarios where light-induced changes of the mechanical damping are opening up perspectives for quantum-mechanical regimes.
