Strong “position-squared” readout of a micromechanical oscillator by an optical cavity

Abstract

We describe an optical cavity which realizes a sensitive “position-squared” read-out for micromechanical oscillators. This read-out uses the cavity’s higher-order transverse modes. We will present detailed measurements and theoretical analysis of this device.
