Premelting at Defects Within Bulk Colloidal Crystals

Abstract

We observe premelting at grain boundaries and dislocations within bulk colloidal crystals using video microscopy. The crystals are 3D thermally responsive microgel colloidal structures. Particle tracking reveals increased disorder in crystalline regions bordering defects.
