Abstract
Procedures developed in recent years allow the group velocity of propagation of light through material systems to be lowered in a significant and controllable manner. This ability to control the velocity of light leads to a variety of important applications in fields such as telecommunications and quantum information. Some of the advances in methods that lead to this slow-down and progress toward developing applications are reviewed in the present work.
