Abstract

We present a theoretical and experimental study of single molecule fluorescence in the proximity of a laser-irradiated metal nanoparticle. As the molecule is approached towards the particle the fluorescence rate increases but then drops rapidly for distances smaller than 10nm. This fluorescence quenching phenomenon is not accounted for by the dipole approximation and hence more rigorous theoretical models need to be applied.
