Abstract
All-semiconductor hyperbolic metamaterial subwavelength resonators are fabricated and characterized. Localized modes are observed in the mid-infrared using angle-, polarization-, and wavelength-dependent transmission and reflection measurements. Numerical simulations show that the strongly confined mode around 1050 cm−1 exhibits a dipolar resonance longitudinal to the vertical axis of the resonator and occupies much of the resonator volume. The narrowest resonators have dimensions 20 times smaller than the free space wavelength of the confined light with a resonator Q = 13. These resonators could be useful for engineering light-matter coupling in mid-infrared devices.
