Abstract

This work aims to establish the ATR-FTIR technique for the characterization of natural and irradiated osseous tissue, and to verify the possible chemical and structural changes caused by laser irradiation. For this purpose, bone samples were irradiated with five different energy densities, and these samples’ ATR-FTIR spectra were then obtained. By comparing the normalized areas under the ATR-FTIR bands, it was possible to observe the laser effects in organic components. These results are important for the clinical use of Er,Cr:YSGG laser in surgical procedures.
