Abstract
Quest for the smallest possible laser has been on-going over several decades, attracting scientists in the laser community. The evolution of small lasers, from vertical cavity surface emitting laser to photonic crystal laser and one-dimensional nanobeam laser, is briefly reviewed. And our recent efforts on the ultra-low threshold small lasers are to be discussed in more detail. The potential and limits of very small metallic lasers and resonators will also be addressed.
