Intense Single-Cycle Pulse Generation in Solids

Abstract

We describe the generation of intense supercontinuum pulses in a multi-plate solid system. The supercontinuum spans from 430 nm to 950 nm and beyond with a conversion efficiency of about 60 %. This broadband pulse has been successfully compressed to 3.6 fs to produce multi-gigawatt peak powers and to single–cycle duration of 2.8 fs at a reduced efficiency. The single-cycle pulse has been applied to high harmonic generation to produce isolated attosecond pulses.
