Abstract

Applications such as optical frequency metrology, direct frequency comb spectroscopy, low-noise microwave generation, and arbitrary waveform generation all benefit from the large mode spacing and high power per mode of stabilized femtosecond laser frequency combs (FLFC) operating at GHz repetiton rates. To date, the highest repetition rate for a self-referenced FLFC is 1.4 GHz [1] (essentially limited by the pulse energy required to achieve sufficient optical bandwidth for self-referencing). Here, a self-referenced Ti:sapphire FLFC with 5 GHz repetition rate and 230 pJ of pulse energy is reported. The individual modes of the 5 GHz FLFC are dispersed and recorded in a 2-d image using a high-resolution spectrometer. This experiment is an important milestone within ongoing efforts to investigate applications in spectroscopy and arbitrary waveform generation with well-stabilized mode-locked femtosecond lasers.
