Inhomogeneities in atom-light interfaces and spin squeezing dynamics

Abstract

In the last decade, the field of continuous variable quantum computation has produced extremely promising results. Many proof of principle experiments were performed and have shown for instance atomic spin squeezing, atomic quantum memories, and teleportation of a quantum state from light onto matter to name only some. Later on, the question was raised how to include inhomogeneities in the interaction of light and atoms [1]. If we for instance think of a laser beam (e.g., TEMoo) propagating through a vapor of atoms, then the problem is very complicated and would include diffraction and other propagation effects. We present a model where we divide atoms and light into subsystems within we can assume homogeneous properties.
