Abstract
A micro-trap for atoms generated by an inhomogeneous magnetic field in the vicinity of a solid surface (atom chip) has been an useful tool in atomic physics. A merit of using micro magnetic structure is a strong trapping confinement that is available with a relatively small current. The shorter the distance between a potential minimum and a current for a magnetic field is, the stronger the confinement will be. However, the small atom-surface distance introduces a short lifetime and an inhomogeneous magnetic potential. So an atom chip with a very small disturbance from the surface is strongly hoped for future applications such as a single mode atomic waveguide for an on-chip atom interferometer, and quantum information processing with atoms.
