Abstract
The optical nonlinearities of semiconductors in the spectral region close to half bandgap offer attractive properties for all-optical switching and other applications,1 In the wavelength range around 1.5 μm AlGaAs waveguides have been extensively studied.2 We present here results on bulk crystals of CdSe, which is a promising alternative material for this wavelength range due to its half-gap energy of 0.875 eV (1.42 μm) and large nonlinear figure of merit.
