Abstract

Ultra-fast all-optical switching for signal routing in photonic networks has been a long term goal to eliminate the electronic bottleneck inherent with other technologies. Unfortunately whilst theoretical concepts for switching systems abound, there have been few materials with good enough properties for use in straightforward directional coupler switches let alone the more exotic concepts based upon the excitation of spatial or temporal solitons.
