Abstract

Here we have tried to observe and analyse the dependence of multiphonon relaxation rate on the size and type of rare-earth ion aligned in the row from Tm3+ to Pr3+ as well as the correlation with the values of the electronic matrix elements of the optical transition between the multiplets involved into n-phonon transition and type of crystal matrix and compare the results with the non-linear theory (NL) of multiphonon relaxation (MPR). We restrict our consideration of the experimentally measured rates to the case of the limited number of phonons n=24÷5, when the contribution of radiative relaxation is small, and when the process of nonradiative relaxation could be well described with the non-linear theory.
