Squeezing with cold atoms

Abstract

It has been known for a long time that interaction of light with a nonlinear medium can modify the quantum fluctuations of the light field. In particular, nearly perfect squeezing is expected from a cavity containing a pure Kerr medium[l]. When two-level atoms are used, the quantum noise reduction is predicted to persist in spite of the added fluorescence noise at the condition that there would be no Doppler effect.
