Abstract

The measurement of the line polarisation, PL, of the fluorescence from a transition enables information relating to the distribution of substrate populations and coherences associated with the transition to be determined. If the exciting laser radiation is linearly polarised and propagates in the y direction and its electric field vector defines the quantisation axis (z axis), then the intensity of the fluorescence in the x direction, I(α), can be analysed by a linear polariser set at an angle α to the quantisation axis, PL, is then defined as
