Abstract

Gain-switching dynamics have important implications for pulse amplification and nonlinear optics. We report, to our knowledge, the first model to describe the rich spatial and temporal dynamics of gain-switched Cr4+ laser systems. In addition we have discovered a new dual pulse pump-probe process with possible optical switching applications. Predictions of the model are tested experimentally in Cr:YAG and forsterite lasers with 1064nm Nd:YAG excitation.
