Long path laser absorption measurements of HF concentration in an aluminum smelter

Abstract

Aluminum is produced in electrolysis cells (pots). In a typical aluminum smelter pots are arranged side by side in 300-1000m long buildings (called potrooms). Gaseous hydrogen fluoride, HF, is generated in normal pot operation. Fugitive emissions of HF through the potroom roof are typically 0.1-2 mgm−3 (~0.1-2ppm by volume) with occasional higher concentrations during production activities.
