Abstract
Single longitudinal mode, q-switched operation has been achieved using a very simple form of self-injection seeding [2], which requires only a bias voltage for the q-switch and a detector and trigger pulse generator. In addition, no intra-cavity wavelength selection is needed. The q-switch is biased to reduce cavity loss to the point where relaxation oscillations are observed at the end of the pump pulse. This is detected and the q-switch fully opened, producing self-seeded SLM pulses.
