Harmonic generation in noble gases using a high intensity 1-μm 1-ps laser

Abstract

Production of laser harmonics occurs when a high intensity laser interacts with a nonlinear medium. At sufficiently high intensities any medium shows nonlinear effects. Production of odd harmonics (up to the thirty-third harmonic of 1.064-μm wavelength) has been demonstrated1 in noble gases using intensities between 1013 and 1014 W/cm2. Lowest-order theory predicts no generation of even harmonics.
