Abstract

The frequency dependence of third-order nonlinear susceptibilities of gases composed of various small atoms and molecules has been measured by the technique of electric-field-induced second harmonic generation (ESHG) with periodic phase matching. Combining these results with those of other nonlinear optical measurements and theoretical calculations allows us to demonstrate several unifying relations.
