Lasing without inversion: concepts and prospects

Abstract

Noninversion lasing was suggested and analyzed by Marcuse1 and Holt2 utilizing the fact that when atoms absorb radiation the absorption line is shifted slightly from the corresponding emission line due to atomic recoil. Connection is made between this concept and the free-electron laser. However, we note that the application of this noninversion lasing scheme due to atomic recoil could only be possible at very short wavelengths.
