Abstract

Recently Harris1 and Kocharovskaya and Khanin2 predicted the possibility of amplification of light in a three-level system with the split upper or lower levels without in version of population. We treat this problem for the split upper laser level and show that there exist conditions for laser gain without inversion for a significantly broader range of characteristics of medium and for a wider class of material than derived in Refs. 1 and 2.
