Picosecond infrared spectroscopy of intervalence band scattering and cooling of hot holes in p-type germanium

Abstract

The IR absorption of p-type germanium ~10 μm is due to transitions from the heavy to light hole band.1 Strong bleaching of the absorption has been found after excitation with nanosecond pulses from CO2 lasers.2 Nanosecond measurements give only limited information on the mechanisms underlying the observed absorption changes, since carrier-carrier and carrier- phonon scattering occur on a time scale much faster than 1 ns.
