Abstract

Recently Yamanishi1 and Chemla et al.2 have proposed independently a new mechanism of the ultrafast optical nonlinearity due to virtual (nonresonant) excitations in semiconductor quantum well (QW) structures biased by an electrostatic field, in which the electrostatic screening due to virtually induced polarization plays a central role. This newly proposed effect is very attractive from the viewpoint of applications in ultrafast optical and optoelectronic devices.
