Abstract

We have developed a method for optically implementing parallel logic operations1 and proposed a concept for parallel neighborhood operations called optical array logic.2 They are based on the technique of coding data into spatial patterns. With the help of coding, rather complicated processing can be executed by simple operations in optical processing, e.g., 2-D correlation. However, this type of processing requires coding process at every processing stage, so that the efficient coding method must be utilized. Here, we present a simple coding method using the phenomenon of birefringence and an optical processor based on this coding method.
