Abstract
The amplification of subpicosecond pulses has traditionally relied on media of relatively low energy storage capability, such as dye or excimer amplifiers. The use of solid-state systems with high energy storage capability was not feasible because of the need to operate at levels far from saturation to avoid small-scale self-focusing effects.
