Abstract

Since the period doubling route to chaos in a directly modulated diode laser was demonstrated[1,2], the effects of spontaneous emission[1] and gain saturation[3] on the dynamics of diode lasers have been investigated. We transformed the nonlinear rate equations with gain saturation and spontaneous emission factor to the eigenvector coordinates of the linearized rate equations. In the transformed nonlinear rate equations two phenomena are lumped into one parameter that turns out to be a damping constant in their linearized equation. Then, we solve the transformed nonlinear rate equations by using multiple scale expansions to derive important analytic relations that describe resonance frequency shift, bistability, and period doubling bifurcations. The analytic results are in good agreement with brute-force numerical simulations.
