Abstract
Su and Schneller1 predicted charged soliton pairs to be the primary photoexcitations of trans-polyacetylene, since they can be supported by its degenerate ground-state configurations. These solitons are mobile domain boundaries between different phases of bond alternation in this 1-D conjugated polymer. Recent picosecond time-resolved absorption experiments on the midgap photoinduced absorption of trans-polyacetylene have identified directly photogenerated charged solitons for the first time.2
