Multiple-order phase conjugation in semiconductor lasers

Abstract

Optical phase conjugation has attracted a lot of interest for both its fundamental and applied aspects.1 The generation of phase conjugated optical waves within the active waveguide of a GaAs/ (GaAI)As semiconductor laser has been reported recently.2,3 Phase conjugation within the gain region of a semiconductor laser is one specific example of intracavity four-wave mixing processes. These processes have been claimed to be responsible also for the coherence properties of a multimode laser due to the intermode coupling phenomena of the various longitudinal modes.4 Multiple- order phase conjugated optical signals have been efficiently generated by external light injection from a single-mode dye laser into the active region of a GaAs/(GaAI)As semiconductor laser.
