Induced modulational instability and parametric four-photon mixing in the anomalous dispersion region of single-mode fibers

Abstract

The modulational instability (MI) in optical fibers1 is a phenomenon in which a cw (or long-pulse) lightwave becomes unstable with respect to a small amplitude or phase modulation. Tal et al.2 have recently reported observation of this phenomenon where they detected the stimulated MI that built up from the spontaneous noise. This paper reports the first observation of induced MI3 where a pump-probe combination was used to provide a prescribed modulation and to measure the gain spectra of this process.
