Abstract

The decomposition of methanol on Ru(001) is studied as a model surface reaction system. Laser-induced thermal desorption (LITD) is used as a real-time probe of the surface reaction. The measurements yield a reaction activation barrier of 12 kcal/mole if a pre-exponential of 5 × 1011 s−1 is assumed, in the LITD experiment, the sample is prepared by saturating the Ru(001) surface at 100 K with methanol. The surface temperature is ramped linearly up to 400 K at 1.5 K/s.
