Abstract

Rydberg levels of the two-electron atom barium for high values of the orbital angular momentum / have been studied using frequency-stabilized cw dye lasers and an atomic beam. "The Rydberg levels were excited in a two-step excitation scheme: $6s5d\left(\text{mestastable}\right)\stackrel{{\lambda }_1}{\to }5d6p\stackrel{{\lambda }_2}{\to }6snl$ in the presence of an electric field E.
