Abstract
So far, successful free-electron laser (FEL) operations have been practically limited to a low or moderate power level which presents no thermal damage problem to the cavity mirrors. Since one advantage of the FEL is its capability of high-power operation, the resonator should be carefully designed so that the irradiance on the mirrors is below the damage threshold.
