Abstract
The goal of our experiment was to observe the nonlinear behavior of light pulses in a ring cavity system which contains a nonlinear medium and to compare the obtained results with the theory of Ikeda and Daido.1 We used a single-mode glass fiber as a dispersive nonlinear medium having an almost adiabatic response. In such a medium the refractive index is instantaneously dependent on the intensity of the light. The intensity of the light in a single-mode fiber can be very high because of its small core diameter (4 μm). In addition, the dispersion accumulates with length.
