Bistable normal incidence reflectivity at a single interface

Abstract

Computed solutions of the Maxwell-Bloch equations show that the normal incidence reflectivity at the boundary of a saturable absorber may exhibit bistable behavior.1 No mirrors are involved, and one only requires the reflection of the incident wave at the polished boundary. The results are obtained working with macroscopic variables without introducing the local field correction. The physical origin of this behavior is the self-reflected wave generated inside the absorber.2 The aim of this paper is to study the range of parameters at which bistability is expected.
